Eight African men hired by a private contractor to work as sorters at Wasteserv received €81,000 less than their Maltese counterparts over a three-year period.
The difference amounted to a total of more than €27,400 every year. While the gross salary for Maltese working as sorters with Wasteserv would be about €11,300 annually, the African men received just over €8,400.
The discrepancy in wages was slammed by Environment Minister Leo Brincat, who condemned the private contractor and its former board for having “acted so shamefully in the past”.
