France's iconic Eiffel Tower lit up in rainbow colours last night in support of those killed by a gunman who attacked a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

The gunman massacred 49 people after pledging allegiance to Islamic State. It was the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Islamic State has reiterated a claim of responsibility for the attack.

The mass shooting was reminiscent of the killings in the Bataclan concert hall in Paris last November 13, when gunmen opened fire during a show and killed dozens.

Parisians said the news of the Orlando shooting brought back "terrible" memories of the November attacks, and that it was important for the two countries to work together to fight extremism.

Messages of support have flowed to the United States from across the world, with many saying the response should be love, not anger.

French newspapers commemorated the tragic event on their front pages, focussing on victims' families.
