An Egyptian man is in a critical condition after suffering multiple fractures when his car slammed into an oncoming van yesterday morning.

Sources said it was not yet clear why the Daewoo Cielo, driven by Omar Adel Zajn, 41, swerved onto the opposing lane and crashed into a Ford Transit driven by Peter West, 46, in Salini Road, Naxxar.

The car spun until it ended up facing the opposite direction.

Egyptian-born Mr Zajn, who lives in Msida, was trapped in the mangled metal of his car.

He was released by Civil Protection Department personnel and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where he was found to be in a critical condition and put in intensive care.

Mr West, who lives in St Paul's Bay, was unhurt.

Magistrate Silvio Meli launched an inquiry.
