The University is set to benefit the most from €41.4 million in European Union funding allocated for the education and cultural sectors in Malta for the period 2007-2013.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina told a press conference this morning that the funds will be used for, among other projects, the setting up of an ICT faculty, an extension of the facilities of the biology and chemistry faculty, a new bio-medical engineering lab, an upgrading of the chemistry lab and the setting up of an electro-magnetic laboratory.

Funds will also be channelled for the building of a new floor to house lecture rooms and facilities at the Junior College while other funds will be used by MCAST, including for the setting up of a centre for multi-media training, an extension of the institute of mechanical engineering and a language laboratory.

Funds have also been allocated for teacher’s professional development.

€3.2 million will be used for the purchase of equipment for science labs in schools all over Malta.

Ms Cristina said EU funds will also be used for the better preservation, presentation and management of St Paul Catacombs, Tarxien Temples and Ggantija.

More projects are awaiting approval.
