Trader Marine has finalised a representation agreement with the prestigious yachting firm Edmiston.

Edmiston, led by Nick Edmiston, has scored some top brokerage deals, such as the sale of Pelorus and Le Grand Bleu to Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich, at the time the largest ever in yachting. The company also does construction and charter, and handles yachts like Leander, a frequent visitor to Malta, and Tom Perkin's Mariette. Activity is focused on yachts measuring from 30 metres up.

Edmiston is based in London and Monte Carlo but also has offices in the Côte d'Azur, Los Angeles and Mexico.

"Nick has always believed in the potential of Malta, but he was encouraged to finally go ahead by the approach of the authorities," managing director Eddie Woods said. "It has taken me years to convince him, but I am sure that, given time, my persistence will reap benefits. He was also impressed by Grand Harbour Marina, which is where Trader Marine will be moving next month."

Grand Harbour Marina was officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II during her recent state visit.

Mr Edmiston is looking at the viability of organising an agents' week in Malta, aimed at charter agents, focusing on yachts 45 metres and up.

"There are more and more boats stopping off to visit Syracuse. Malta could be a good pick-up point for yachts destined for cruising in Sicily. Malta is limited in what it can offer, but it certainly can sustain visitors in its own right. We can also attract boats to spend winter here, and, of course, to come here for fuel bunkering," he remarked.

Edmiston is also considering the use of Malta Super Yacht Services.

"Large yachts often have to wait two years for a refit," Mr Woods said. "There is considerable interest in the facilities it offers, especially with so many successful contracts to its name."
