Throwing a party with disposable cups creates a lot of waste, which is why American-based company Loliware reckons it's on to a winner with its edible cups.

It calls its cups "biodegredible" - biodegradable and edible - and they come in five different flavours: citrus, cherry, matcha green tea, vanilla and natural. They’re made out seaweed, organic sweeteners and plant-based flavors and colours, making the product suitable for vegans.

The website has a recipe book with tastes that best accompany each cup’s flavours.

If munching on tableware isn’t your cup of tea, the cup can be quickly disintegrated. According to Food&Wine, they degrade into soil in 60 days. Unless you want melting mix of seaweed and flavours on your hands, you might want to refrain from enjoying hot beverages from these cups.

“You can throw them in the grass or disintegrate them in a matter of minutes with hot water,” co-founder Chelsea Briganti told the Guardian.

The company aims to expand their business into a line of edible and biodegradable tableware and packaging.

“For every cup eaten, we are saving a plastic cup from entering the landfill. Billions of plastic cups are entering the landfill every year. If Loliware replaces even a small percentage, that would have far-reaching impact,” Briganti said.

But be warned. Throwing a party with edible tableware isn't easy on the budget, with a packet of four cups costing €14.
