It is ideal to have a TV programme that gives importance to the participation of the public. The wider the variety of subjects discussed, the more popular the programme may become. However, transparency should always be applied in the media, especially in successful TV programmes. Pressing problems should be discussed so that the truth can reach a wide population.

Because of the global economic recession, certain issues are growing more alarming with each passing day, among them that of water and electricity; a pressing problem that seemingly doesn't have a suitable solution. Then there is the case of ST Microelectronics, where employees are deeply worried about becoming unemployed in the near future.

Why does the national TV station not discuss these problematic realities, knowing that programmes such as Bondi+ and Xarabank are among the most popular? The subject of the Catholic Church and homosexuality (Xarabank, January 30) is an important one, since it deals with issues of morality and society. However, I believe the country's economic situation should be given priority in the current circumstances. The same can be said about Bondi+ where the subject of life and death was recently discussed. It is true that such a subject is fascinating, but we ought to give precedence to the real problems in this world, rather than debating whether some people can really talk to the dead.

I am afraid that such programmes are distracting the public from giving importance to the pressing economic issues. The public should know the truth and be given the chance to give their opinion on these influential programmes.
