Social partners and other stakeholders were yesterday invited to submit their ideas in a consultation process that will pave the way for the eco-tax regime to be dismantled.

The move follows a Budget announcement that eco-contribution on imported electronic and electric products will be removed by the end of this year. As part of this reform, eco-tax on tyres, ammunition and petroleum oil has already been replaced with excise tax.

Addressing a joint meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development and the Malta EU Steering Action Committee, Environment Minister Leo Brincat yesterday said Malta would still be in line with the stringent regulations of the EU’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Directive. Enforcement would be carried out by the Environment and Resources Authority, an entity to be created when the planning authority is split.
