A recent initiative taken by the student eco-school committee of St Joseph's School, Blata l-Bajda, has enabled the school to save around 800 litres of water a month.

The students fitted 'water hippos' in the flushing mechanisms of the school's toilets. A water hippo is a 500 ml plastic bottle filled with stones, which takes up the place of the equivalent amount of water in the flushing and helps save water.

The school calculated that its Form 3 toilets are flushed 80 times a day, or up to 400 flushes a week and 1,600 a month.

In another activity related to Mother's Day the students sold plants in line with its eco code: 'Let's be seen to be green'. Next year the school aims to grow its own plants, making sure they are native species, therefore needing less water.

Meanwhile, the school has continued making students more aware of the need to save electricity in line with its 'Be bright, save light' eco code.

The school also has green bins in its classrooms and recycles plastic bottles. In line with the principle of 'reduce, re-use and recycle'.

A new eco code adopted by the Junior School this year is 'Global warming will make the Earth pop; let's work to make it stop'.
