Żebbuġ Rangers 5
Sirens 2

Striker Tomislav Trebovac produced a superb display as he led Żebbuġ Rangers to their first win of the season after a shock 5-2 hammering of Sirens, yesterday.

There was only one team in it with Tommaso Volpi’s Sirens a shadow of the side that promised so much earlier in the season.

A great Trebovac goal after only six minutes gave Johann Cilia’s side the lead to dash Sirens’ hopes of taking early control of the match.

Veteran Orosco Anonam almost drew the teams level ten minutes later but his shot took a deflection to a corner in the last minute.

Sirens were struggling to impose their game. On 30 minutes, Ian Zammit’s attempt was cleared by the Rangers’ defence.

But seven minutes later Trebovac was again on target. He was allowed extra space by the Sirens’ markers as he rushed into the box and beat keeper Sean Cini with a shot from an angle.

Trebovac blasted wide from a good position after the restart but soon after the score became 3-0 as Dario Tabone beat two defenders before ramming his shot into the roof of the net.

Sirens were still coming to terms with the situation when the unmarked Ratko Mandic buried his header home. At 4-0, the game was as good as over even though Charles Newuche pulled one back from a free-kick on 73 minutes.

However, there was no way back for Volpi’s lads after Tyrone Farrugia sliced a clearance past a stranded Cini for an own goal.

Farrugia did make partial amends when he slotted home following a melee inside the opponents’ box. However, by that time Rangers had long been home and dry.
