Low-cost airline easyJet today celebrated carrying its two millionth passenger - Sandra Johnstone - from Malta. In celebration it rewarded the lucky traveller with a pair of flights.
Ali Gayward, UK commercial manager for easyJet said the airline had come a long way since the launch of its first flight to Malta back in April 2008.
"In our first 12 months at Malta Airport we carried over 200,000 passengers – we now carry 320,000 passengers a year on London Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa and Naples routes.”
Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said this was a remarkable achievement considering that Easyjet operations to Malta started only in 2008 and had been expanding in an organic manner both in terms of the number of services and the territories served.
Malta, he said, had embarked on a strategy of increasing airline routes. Results were impressive, as tourism volume, overnights and expenditure grew consistently year by year.
In July easyJet will also celebrate carrying one million passengers on the London Gatwick to Malta route.
