Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi inaugurated the new offices of the European Asylum Office in Marsa this morning.

The asylum office, EASO, was a “remarkable achievement” in Malta’s short history as a EU member state and “testimony to Malta’s commitment, performance and reputation in the EU,” Dr Gonzi said during the ceremony.

EASO had an important role to play in establishing a Common European Asylum System that was based on shared responsibilities, he added.

Dr Gonzi also thanked former Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici and Malta’s EU Representative Richard Cachia Caruana, who were both present at the inauguration, for their crucial roles in establishing the office.

Robert Visser, EASO’s Executive Director, also thanked the Maltese government, European Commission and Parliament, for the move to the new offices.

Situated next to Transport Malta’s offices in Xatt L-Għassara Tal-Għeneb, the offices are spread out on around 3,700 square metres on four floors.
