Hamrun Spartans moved within touching distance of easing their relegation worries with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Marsaxlokk at the Tedesco Stadium.

The Spartans were in control right from the outset and took the lead on five minutes when Massimo Grima sent a low ball inside the area and Kevin Sammut's body feint released Anderson Ribeiro who fired home with a rasping drive.

Marsaxlokk managed to draw level on 14 minutes when Trevor Templeman's throughball released Gary Caruana who blasted the ball past the onrushing Borg.

Hamrun soon regrouped and on 22 minutes they regained the lead when Grima unleashed a fierce drive from outside the area which Cassar only managed to punch into the feet of Ribeiro who was upended in the area by Jermaine Brincat. Referee Trustan Farrugia Cann immediately pointed to the spot and the Spartans striker drilled the ball home as Cassar could only touch the ball into the net.

The Spartans extended their lead on 27 minutes when from a Matthew Gauci corner kick Grima's header was cleared off the line by Brincat but the Hamrun midfielder was first to the rebound to fire the ball into the net.

Hamrun striker Anderson Ribeiro was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
