The Blue Hole area in Dwejra should be declared a marine protected area to minimise the negative impact of fishing, the Gozo Tourism Association said this morning.

It said in a statement that although the collapse of the Azure Window had cost Gozo one of its iconic beauties, underwater video footage showed that another underwater attraction had been created as a legacy of the window.

“The creation of such a natural dive site will now enhance the already popular attraction of the Blue Hole which is already sought after by divers who visit Gozo.

In a tweet, Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil gave the GTA initiative his backing, saying he fully agreed with the idea.

The GTA said that various species of marine life had already started to inhabit the area slowly turning it into another underwater attraction.

It called on the government and the authorities concerned to refrain from any form of intervention in the area.

The association called for the necessary resources to be deployed to maintain and enforce the site.
