Dutch Prince Johan Friso, who went into a coma following a skiing accident in February of 2012, has died.

He was 44 years-old.

The government issued a statement saying the Prince died from complications that arose from brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation after his ski accident.

The prince was in Austria in 2012 when he was buried in an avalanche.

The younger brother of King Willem-Alexander, he suffered brain damage after he was starved of oxygen while he was buried under snow for 25 minutes.

Despite showing occasional signs of minimal consciousness at hospital in London, his condition did not improve any further. He was taken to The Hague last month.
