The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday launched a new initiative as part of the award scheme that he founded in 1956 aimed at making an impact on the lives of young people.

A ‘Friends of the Award Programme’ has been created that encourages individuals and corporates to become a ‘Friend’ and recognises and thanks donors for their support.

It is open to trusts, foundations, individuals, corporates and supporters who share the same goal.

The initiative was launched at the Casino Maltese in Valletta by the Duke of Edinburgh, the founder of the award, who is in Malta accompanying the Queen for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Also present was the patron of the award, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.

During the launch, the first group of Friends of the Award received a certificate of recognition from the president.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award equips young people for life and work as employers worldwide recognise the programme’s worth as an empowerment tool.

Many large organisations even offer the award to young employees as part of a progressive career path within their organisation.

The president praised the Duke for his vision when he launched the award that has changed the lives of so many young people. It has helped many to become responsible citizens, she said.

“The fact that participants experience team spirit, becoming aware of the needs of society in which they live, and decide to help in the development of their community, is so commendable,” she said.
