A man who drunkenly hurt an animal and destroyed property belonging to a woman he has been charged with physically hurting was handed an 18-month prison sentence by a court today.

39-year-old Mosta resident Garry John Peat pleaded guilty to being drunk in public, causing damage of more than €250 to the property of Rose Rogers, hurting an animal and breaching bail conditions and protection orders imposed on him in June.

The incident happened at around 1.30am on Friday night in St Paul's Bay. Mr Peat had previously been arraigned and charged with causing Ms Rogers bodily harm.

In its decision, the court presided over by Magistrate Ian Farrugia said that despite the admission of guilt, the seriousness of the crimes meant "the punishment must be one which conveys a clear and unequivocal message."

Mr Peat was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted.
