A 37-year-old man, Kevin Saliba, from Sliema, was jailed for five years today after he was convicted of selling heroin to minors.

The court in its sentence said drug trafficking was a serious crime which could not be excused in any way by the fact that somebody was an addict and that the crime was committed to fund the addition.

Saliba had been caught red handed by the police and investigations showed he had sold heroin and cocaine in two instanced in  2007 and 2008. He was found in possession of 51.6 grams of cocaine when he was arrested. The court said it had resulted that he had sold drugs to minors for more than a month.

Saliba was also fined €3,000.

The accused had 10 previous convictions on his record and had been given a suspended sentence, probation orders and conditional discharges. The court said he had still ignored all these opportunities to reform.

The court, however, noted his early guilty plea.
