One of three men arrested on Saturday during a police raid at a Gżira residence, was handed a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and possession upon his arraignment on Monday.

Godwin Gatt, a 48-year old unemployed Gżira resident, admitted to cocaine trafficking as well as the possession of cocaine and heroin in circumstances indicating that the drugs were not for his own personal use. He was further accused of recidivism.

The arraignment followed a raid by the Special Intervention Unit and the Traffic Section, acting on a tip-off about alleged drug trafficking and abuse taking place at a residence in Triq tas-Sliema.

Upon the accused’s own admission, the court, presided over by magistrate Doreen Clarke, declared him guilty and condemned him to a three-year jail term and a €1,000 fine, further ordering him to fork out court expert expenses.

The court also ordered the destruction of the drugs found at the man’s residence.

Upon a request by the accused’s defence lawyer, the court directed the Director of CCF to provide the man with all necessary help to address his addiction.

Inspectors Justine Grech and Mark Mercieca prosecuted. Lawyer Benjamin Valenzia was legal aid counsel.
