Paraguay's justice minister has been sacked after a prison raid revealed how a Brazilian drug lord was serving time in a three-room luxury suite, complete with library, conference room and plasma TV.
Authorities made the discovery after a bomb scare prompted a raid of Tacumbu prison in the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion, the BBC reported.
Drug lord Jarvis Chimenes Pavao, who is serving an eight-year sentence for money laundering and was due for release next year, was allegedly planning to use explosives to blow his way out of prison.
But his plan backfired spectacularly when authorities got wind of his plans, raided the prison - and discovered his prison pad.
The 'VIP cell' had an ensuite bathroom, kitchen, air conditioning, luxury furniture and a DVD collection, including an entire series based on Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Pavao has now been transferred to a cell in a different prison, and his former inmate neighbours are already missing him.
"He was the most loved man in this prison," said one inmate. Pavao reportedly paid for a football pitch and chapel at the prison, and employed a number of inmates to act as his personal bodyguards.
Justice minister Carla Bacigalupo was sacked shortly after the discovery, and his replacement has now vowed a crackdown.
Pavao's lawyer has claimed that the opulence was made possible by extensive bribes. ""Six or seven justice ministers and six or seven prison directors" took money from the drug lord, lawyer Laura Acasuso claimed.
