Just 3% of prisoners who ended up behind bars because of drug convictions re-offended and ended up in prison a second time, the Minister of Home Affairs has disclosed.

Dr Carm Mifsud Bonnici was replying to a question in parliament by Labour deputy leader Anġlu Farrugia, who asked how many was jailed for drug offences, how many were rehabilitated and how many returned to prison for the same reason since 2008.

The minister said 119 people were jailed for drug offences in 2008 and an equal number in 2009.

104 were jailed in 2010, 88 last year and 24 up to Match 24 this year.

Yet only 14 returned to prison a second time on drug offences after they served out the first sentence.
