A drug addict was this morning remanded in custody at the prisons after pleading not guilty to trying to steal a car from Hamrun and damaging it last Sunday.

Michael Sultana, 39, of Valletta also pleaded not guilty to stealing a mobile phone from another car and relapsing.

In the courtroom, Mr Sultana started crying and said he did not want to be sent to prison, where he has already spent time. He asked the court to send him to the Drugs Dependence Unit at Mount Carmel.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella sent a recommendation to the prisons director for Mr Sultana to be given all the help necessary to help him overcome his drug problems.

Police inspector Robert Vella told the court that Mr Sultana has major problems because of his addiction.
