A driver was trapped in the wreckage of his car following a collision at Mellieha this afternoon.

The crash, on the road which leads from the Mellieha Bypass to Manikata, took place at about 4.40 p.m. and involved a Mitsubishi pick-up van and a Ford Fiesta travelling in opposite directions.

The Fiesta, which the injured man was driving, was thrown off the road and onto the grass by the force of impact.

The driver, who is from Rabat, had his legs trapped and a rescue crew from the nearby Xemxija station of the Civil Protection Department was called on the scene to cut the wreckage. Station chief Natalino Bezzina led the operation.

The driver was then rushed to hospital in an ambulance. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
