The driver who is alleged to have caused the hit and run accident at the Birkirkara Bypass last Sunday was arraigned in court today and accused of negligent driving, injuring Eleno Zarb, damaging his Maruti, and failing to stop to give his particulars.

Emanuel Sammut, 38, of Birkirkara, was also accused of having been driving under the influence of drink, being in unlawful possession of a harpoon, lodging a false report and relapsing.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000.

The accident happened at about 5.15 p.m. at the junction of the Birkirkara Bypass with Tumas Fenech Street. The Maruti that was being driven by Mr Zarb was flipped over on its side with the force of impact caused by a van allegedly driven by Mr Sammut. Mr Zarb had to be assisted by Civil Protection Department rescuers after he was trapped.
