Work on the conservation of authentic clothing, armour and weapons at Palace Armoury is going on slowly but surely.

The project, under the patronage of insurers Gasan Mamo, started in 2007. Heritage Malta, which is responsible for the museum, is currently working on dressing up mannequins in historic 16th century costume.

Drawing upon the museum’s vast reserve collection, the agency is matching suits of armour to dress up 20 mannequins. Accoutrements such as the leather straps and daggers, which have not stood the test of time, are being crafted and aged by the agency to complete the whole image.

Five conservators are working on the suits, six of which have already been restored.

Heritage Malta chairman Joseph Said thanked Gasan Mamo for taking the armoury and called on similar companies to sponsor other Heritage Malta sties.

“We can never have enough money,” he said.
