A draft e-commerce national strategy aimed to help Maltese businesses face the challenge of internet shopping was launched this morning by Competitivness Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera.

The aim of the strategy, covering the period 2014-2020, is to provide businesses with the necessary resources to capitalise from the opportunities brought about by electronic commerce.

Dr Herrera noted that internet sales were increasing by an average 18 per cent each year.

Nearly half of the Maltese bought over the internet and expenditure on electronic sites last year based on Paypal figures amounted to €66 million, double the amount in 2009. It was a shame that only a few Maltese bought from local sites, however.

He noted that only 12 per cent of enterprises in Malta sold over the internet. Local industry faced particular challenges for Malta, including the size of the local market.

The consequences of this situation were obvious and Malta did not have the luxury to wait to face the challenge. Unless immediate steps were taken, he said, it would be too late.

The draft, which is open for consultation until August 14, is based upon another consultation process with interested parties.
