A draft document “Public Playgrounds – Requirements for Public Playground Safety and their Management” has been launched for consultation by the Malta Standards Authority.

The draft was launched at the John Borg Garden in Birkirkara by Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said and MSA chairman Francis E. Farrugia, this afternoon.

Dr Said said that public recreational zones were essential in today’s society and were used by both children and adults. So it was of utmost importance that they were accessible, well planned, and built in a way so as to attract people of different needs and ages.

The aim of the standards were to provide information on the design and planning of new public recreational zones, the technical details to be included in calls for tenders for equipment to be used in these zones, the regular maintenance of these zones, and the procedure on routine and annual inspections.

They drawn up by a technical committee made up of experts and representatives from the Malta Standards Authority, the Local Government Department, the Local Councils Association, the Environmental Health Department, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, the National Commission for People with a Disability, the office of the Children’s Commissioner and the Malta Playing Fields’ Association.

Feedback should be sent to the MSA at francis.p.farrugia@msa.org.mt .
