The trial has started of a Greek bouncer who stands accused with having beaten Maltese-Australian tourist Doujon Zammit to death near a disco on the island of Mykonos.

The case happened in the summer of 2008, shortly after Zammit had visited relatives in Malta.

The trial is being held on the island of Lesvos.

Marios Antonopoulos is charged with the murder of Doujon Zammit, while three other men, also Greek, have been charged with assault and complicity to murder.

The Associated Press quoted Zammit's father, Oliver, as saying that the family hoped for the conviction of all four defendants.
