I would like to compliment your columnist Claire Bonello (January 2) for writing in favour of cyclists.

I hope the St Julian’s council is not going to fill up the promenade with signs banning cycling as had happened a few years ago all over St Julian’s when it hastily introduced ridiculous residential parking rules and had to withdraw them a few days later.

If I am not mistaken, the planters between the road and the pavement were installed at the expense of the width of the road – in other words when two buses or large trucks meet, there is not much space left for a cyclist.

I agree with some restrictions for all cyclists, young and old, at certain times of the day and year, such as summer evenings and weekends in winter from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I prefer cycling off-road in the countryside, but a few beginners who are unable to cycle long distances prefer the promenade.

Cycling is a non-impact sport and is ideal for those suffering from chronic injuries that do not allow for walking or jogging. I would rather face the consequences of a slight accident between a cyclist and a pedestrian than between a cyclist and a driver sending a text message or under the influence of alcohol.

Wardens should pay more attention to littering by negligent pet owners, vandalism, irresponsible driving as well as vehicles emitting fumes which ruin the benefit of exercise on the front.
