Progress was registered today in a two-hour meeting was held today between a delegation from the Medical Association of Malta and a government delegation.

The doctors' union warned yesterday it would order strike action unless progress was made in talks on a shortage of doctors and consultants at Mater Dei Hospital and health centres, cost-cutting at Mater Dei, and the privatisation of services at Karin Grech rehabilitation hospital, St Luke's and Gozo.

The MAM said in a statement significant progress was made in the discussions but a number of issues needed clearance with third parties while a few others remained pending.

Both sides agreed to meet again next week in an effort to resolve pending issues.
