The decision about whether former Police Inspector David Gatt should be given bail is to be taken on Tuesday. Dr Gatt has, in the meantime, been remanded in custody.

A court, presided over by Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona, heard evidence by the Commissioner of Police, the Deputy Commissioner and a police constable on his alleged involvement in a number of hold-ups.

The court also heard evidence by a medical doctor who explained how he was contacted by Gatt to treat a man who was later accused of involvement in the attempted HSBC hold-up in Qormi at the end of June.

The defence argued for bail, saying the main witnesses had been heard, and David Gatt did not have a criminal record.

The police opposed bail arguing that they were conducting further investigations which involved the accused.

The magistrate said the bail decision would be taken on Tuesday.

In his evidence, the doctor, John Zammit Montebello, explained how former Police Inspector (and lawyer) David Gatt phoned him and asked him if he could given his number to a client who needed medical assistance. He also asked him to keep everything secret.

He said that three men then called at his clinic at about 5 p.m.. He examined the patient who had something in his jaw and referred him for an X-Ray. When two of the men returned to his clinic in the following morning, the police moved in and arrested everyone, including himself.

The two men, Dr Zammit Montebello said, were Darren Debono and Vince Muscat (who were later accused of their alleged involvement in the hold-up),

Dr Zammit Montebello said he did not ask Debono what he had in his jaw but sent him to Da Vinci Hospital for an X-Ray.

Dr Zammit Montebello confirmed earlier evidence that before Debono and Muscat were arraigned in the HSBC case, he was told by David Gatt not to reveal his name in the court proceedings (where he acted as defence counsel).

Subsequently, he gave evidence in a compilation before Edwina Grima during which he identified the two people who had come to his clinic. The connection between the accused and the two people was the telephone call in which Gatt asked had him if he could go speak to him.

Dr Zammit Montebello was shown a photograph (of suspect Fabio Psaila) and asked whether he was among the three men who had called at his clinic the first time. Dr Zammit Montebello said he was.

He also said that Darren Debono had given a false name when he was brought for treatment.
