A doctor filed a judicial protest today claiming his application to be included in the register of specialists was turned down by the Committee for the Approval of Specialists because he has muscular dystrophy.

Protest was filed by Naged Megally against the Prime Minister, the Health Minister, the Committee for the Approval of Specialists, the registrar of the Committee and the Attorney General.

Dr Megally was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in 1986 and his condition has deteriorated and he needs to be helped to walk

However despite his condition he decided to further his studies in order to become a specialist in ultrasound within the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Dr Magally said he has a certificate of competence from The Foetal Medicine Foundation and is an active member of this world renowned organization

In 1998 Dr Magally started to work ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology and is the only doctor at Mater Dei Hospital that is a specialist in Doppler and 4D ultrasound.

He said that after applying to be added to the register of specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology, his application was turned down by the Committee for the Approval of Specialists. He was also denied membership of the register of Specialists in Family Medicine. Dr Magally is claiming that his application was turned down because of his disabilities Dr Magally said that his basic rights were being breached as he was not allowed to practice as an ultrasound specialist.

Lawyer Owen Bonnici signed the protest.
