The Malta Dockers Union has filed an application in court calling for the issue of a warrant of prohibitory injunction against Virtu' Ferries, which, it claimed, had ignored a court order not to carry and unload heavy cargo in Grand Harbour on May 1.

In its application, the union said that last Friday, a court had ordered the company not to load or unload cargo in Grand Harbour on May 1, one of five days during which, according to regulations, port workers were not to work.

The union said that the company's ferries on May 1 had still carried heavy commercial vehicles which could carry some 10 tons of cargo. The union said it had photographic evidence of the vehicles being loaded and unloaded, without the involvement of port workers.

The union aid that according  to law, only licensed port workers can carry out loading and unloading works when the merchandise exceeds 10 tonnes.
