If our Labour MPs truly love our country, now is the time to do something. It’s a mad world we live in, made madder by corruption. Right now it’s so topsy-turvy it seems difficult to know where to start.
But since there are people out there who are trying hard to confuse the issue let me say what needs to be said, screaming out loudly: corruption is wrong, abominable and can never be condoned or allowed to be seen as condoned.
Corruption in all its guises should be condemned. With no ifs, buts or howevers.
Joseph Muscat is doing himself a disservice by trying to defend the antics of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri. The longer the Prime Minister defends their position the more involved he seems to be in their plotting, in their misdeeds.
No amount of fines, pleading ignorance, or saying that accounts are to be closed, will clean the slate for the nefarious duo.
Opening a company in Panama, even if it holds a solitary euro, smacks of corruption, bad deals and illicit gains or the dream and future acquisition of money which is not declared. That is the only reason people use Panama.
Politicians need to be seen to be above corruption.
If there are any Labour politicians who care about Malta more than their leader, there has never been a better time to do the right thing and speak up
Labour apologists and even Alternattiva Demokratika are saying that the PN cannot condemn corruption, having been embroiled in it themselves. So who can? Emmy Bezzina and Arnold Cassola?
I beg to differ. And I expect not just the PN, but all Labour supporters, all switchers, all men and women of principle to scream out against corruption.
Bringing up the case of Ninu Zammit and Michael Falzon just does not hold water. Their secret accounts were discovered a number of years after they held positions of power. Of course what they did was despicable. But what would have been unforgivable is if the then prime minister had found out about the accounts and defended their right to have them and keep them. Or if he had merely ordered them to get them regularised.
This Panama crisis has engulfed the country and needs to be resolved immediately. The faster the people implicated go the better.
If there are any Labour politicians who care about Malta more than their leader, there has never been a better time to do the right thing and speak up. Or exeunt silently to be seen as untainted by this corruption.
Then, and only then, can they save their self-respect, now and for years to come.
