The 'anti-foreign workers' declaration being made by certain Maltese politicians led to a populist rhetoric based on a fear campaign and not facts, the leftist think-tank Żminijietna said.

Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia has warned of “socio-cultural ruin” if the influx of foreign workers was not carefully managed as part of a long-term economic plan.

Żminijietna said in a statement that addressing precarious work should be the way forward, rather than blaming foreign workers who were essential to Maltese economy.

“Blaming foreign workers for Malta’s woes is very dangerous. These politicians should concentrate their energy on employers who are abusing the system,” Żminijietna said, calling for all parties in Parliament to support the General Workers’ Union proposal that all workers should unionised.
