Labour leader Joseph Muscat stated at the PL general conference: “I cannot impose my views about divorce on Labour MPs because it would go against the value of tolerance towards others whose beliefs are different”.

With this banal excuse, the PL is not taking a position on such a sensitive issue as divorce legislation.

Dr Muscat, however, has contradicted himself in the same breath since his party has rightly taken a clear position on IVF. Why has he here imposed his views on his party? Dr Muscat also spoke about crime, education, employment, pensions, children and Gozo in his intervention.

Is the PL going to take a position on these issues? By his own line of reasoning, if it does the PL will be accepting the imposition of Dr Muscat’s views on the different issues.

If the PL aspires to be a political party, it cannot abdicate its role of taking a position on sensitive issues. If it does not, it might as well disband and declare itself a debating society.
