Buenos Aires is home to many of the most iconic landmarks in the country, particularly the Casa Rosada and the Metropolitan Cathedral, both in Plaza de Mayo.

La Recoleta cemetery is visited by many to see the tomb of Eva Peron, buried among many other rich and famous citizens.

The Plaza de Mayo is the main square located in the neighbourhood of Montserrat. Its name commemorates the May Revolution of 1810 that gave Argentina its independence from Spain.

The square houses many of the city’s landmarks, including the Casada Rosada, the presidential palace where Eva Peron talked to the people from the balcony.

Puerto Madero is the most expensive and exclusive neighbourhood in the city, where every street has been named after a woman. It represents the largest urban renewal project, as it was once an area filled with docks and warehouses. It is popular with both locals and tourists as there are five-star hotels, theatres, galleries, multinational restaurants, bars and cafes.

The Natural Park and Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve are lovely green areas for leisure activities.

Pretty San Telmo, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, is surrounded by cafes, tango parlours and antique shops. A visit to the San Telmo fair and the Museum of Modern Art should not be missed.

La Boca, home of the world-famous Boca Juniors football team, is known for its architecture and art. Visitors will come across many artists showing their spontaneous talents in the streets.

The neighbourhood is beautiful for its pedestrian streets lined with bright coloured houses, also known as caminito.

Buenos Aires has more than 3,500 restaurants and it is world-renowned for its nightlife. Visitors can enjoy traditional South American styles and rhythms in its trendy clubs

Argentina’s capital is also very well-known for the tango, danced to remarkable music that distinguishes the city from any other in the world. Those who want to experience a tango should head to the Centro Cultural Torquato Tasso, a venue in which respected artists perform regularly.

The city offers a packed calendar of events, including a 10-day showcase of international non-Hollywood films (April), fashion Buenos Aires (March and September) and the famous Tango Festival (August) – a nine-day extravaganza of concerts, shows and free classes.

Sports activities are abundant. Football and polo are two of the most popular sports while motor racing, basketball, rugby, hockey and golf are also an attraction.

From Buenos Aires, visitors can easily take an excursion to experience gaucho life.

El Ombú de Areco is a historical colonial-style working estancia (ranch). It is located in San Antonio de Areco, an hour’s drive from downtown Buenos Aires.

As Buenos Aires is situated in the southern hemisphere and the climate is generally pleasant, with moderate temperatures in winter (June to August), while the summer months (December to February) are hot and humid.

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the best months to visit the capital. Also, most festivals and sporting activities take place during these months.

Beyond Buenos Aires

Visitors can opt to travel north towards the Brazilian border, on the Argentinean side of Iguazú.

Considered a site of natural heritage, Iguazu Falls is located between the National Park of Iguaçu, in Brazil, and Iguazú National Park in Misiones, Argentina.

Most visitors reach the falls on the Argentinean side through the city of Puerto Iguazú. If tourists want to visit the waterfalls on the Brazilian side, they must apply in person for a visa at the Brazilian consulate in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazú.

Getting there
