Gianluca Dingli enjoyed further success when taking part in the second round of races from the Sicilian Rotax Regional Championship at the Triscina International Circuit.

Over 50 drivers took part in various categories. The 16-year-old Dingli faced the challenge of nine other Sicilian semi-professionals in his class while racing for the BRM International team.

The Maltese youngster was the star of the show in the opening round, signalling that he had no intention of letting up as he registered the fastest lap times in the practice runs.

Dingli’s talent and competitive streak were in tune with his efficient BRM kart, prepared by Mario Lena, his team manager. By the end of the practice session, record lap times were all tagged by Dingli who started the first race on pole.

It was difficult, however, for Dingli to do the race he wanted and in the end, he had to settle for second place behind Carlo Speciale.

All was set for the next race in programme but it started badly for Dingli as he dropped four places by the first corner after some pressure from the home racers.

However, Dingli never gave up and overtook those in front of him one by one. By the end of lap five, he had regained the lead. Back markers slowed down Dingli but race director Vito Lombardo immediately waved the warning flags, allowing the leader to build on his advantage and take the chequered flag.

After an engine check, Dingli was declared winner of the second round of the championship with Speciale a close second.

Lena said: “Gianluca is maturing into a fine driver, race after race. He is a talented and disciplined competitor. However, we cannot underestimate the other drivers as they are all gearing up to give Gianluca a good run for his money.”

The third round of the championship will be held next month at the Pista Sole Luna in Vittoria.
