I refer to my letter entitled No Digital Reception (February 11), regarding which, I feel the need to make some clarifications.

In my letter I stated that "the Malta Communications Authority diplomatically shrugged off the matter (DBA transmission) and advised me that this was under the remit of the Broadcasting Authority".

Furthermore I have to add that I immediately received another reply from this Authority informing me that there was a misunderstanding, and that actually the MCA was responsible for DAB transmission in Malta. In fact, Mark Stivala from the MCA was very helpful and even phoned to explain to me that one of the conditions laid out for the DAB provider was that by June 2009, Malta and Gozo were to be provided with DAB reception. I regret this unintentional omission, for which I take full responsibility.

In addition there was another development. Yesterday an official responsible for the DAB transmission phoned me and he cordially explained the unforeseen difficulties they are facing in providing DAB reception coverage in Gozo.

I fully appreciate all the genuine efforts being undertaken by all parties concerned, but still no one can blame me, and Gozitans alike, for expecting a service similar to that available in Malta, especially one in which the DAB advertisements give the impression that the reception covers Malta and Gozo.

I am merely trying to highlight the underlying issue that where Gozo is concerned the MCA is taking matters lightly, same as what happened when Vodafone started providing the 3G service in Malta but which was only available in Gozo about a year later.

Gozitans are not asking for any special treatment but expect that those who take the respective decisions should do their best to ensure that these are implemented equally and fairly to all concerned.
