The Labour Party this morning denied claims by shadow minister Marthese Portelli that when the price of oil was similar to what it was today, the price of diesel in Malta was 61c.

In a statement, it said the Brent price was now around $39.60 a barrel and the last time the price was similar was on December 9, 2008. Then, under the previous administration, the price of diesel was €1.23, more than double the amount stated by the Opposition.

This meant that using Dr Portelli’s calculation, the government had been stealing the people 62c per litre of diesel.

Reality was that the price of diesel today had gone down to €1.16, which was seven cents than the December 2008 rpice when the international price of oil had also been close to $40.

While the Nationalist administration had increased the price of diesel by 36c, this government had reduced it by 24c.
