...that drivers in Nomex-3 overalls can survive for 35 seconds even in temperatures of 840°C?

By way of a comparison, the maximum temperature in a sauna is 100°C, in an apartment fire it would be up to 800°C and the lava in a volcanic eruption reaches between 750 and 1,000°C.

It happened 10 years ago...

Well, it was the struggle for the front row with Hill in the Williams taking pole and Schumacher, in the Benetton, alongside. It was a thrilling race but with 15 laps remaining Hill, running on new rubber, decided to take Schumacher out. He did but he also ended up in the gravel.

The dejected pair walked separately back to pits. However, it was a memorable day as Schumacher'a team-mate Johnny Herbert, who seven years earlier had broken both feet after a terrific accident, scored his maiden F1 victory at his home Grand Prix.

Second was Alesi in a Ferrari ahead of Coulthard (Williams), Panis (Ligier), Blundell (McLaren) and Frentzen (Sauber Ford).

July 16, 1995 was also a sad day for Formula One as legendary F1 driver Juan Manuel Fangio passed away at the age of 84.

2003 - R. Barrichello (Ferrari)

Barrichello dominated the weekend and won a chaotic and thrilling race interrupted by a kilted demonstrator running onto the track.

2002 - M. Schumacher (Ferrari)

Schumacher led a Ferrari one-two. Montoya was third, his Williams the only car not lapped by the top two. BAR scored their first points of the year.

¤ Silverstone, a World War Two airfield, hosted the first Formula One world championship race in 1950 and has shared the British Grand Prix with Brands Hatch and Aintree.

The race has been held at Silverstone solely since 1987. The track, one of the longest in F1, has a mixture of high and low-speed turns with some long straights and a smooth surface with high levels of grip.
