The Maltese Diabetes Association, in conjunction with the Diabetes and Endocrine Centre at the Department of Health, recently held their first annual diabetes camp for youths abroad.

The trip was sponsored by the HSBC Malta Foundation and allowed youths afflicted by the disease to enjoy health activities and historical excursions over the week-long camp in the northern Italian town of Dobbiaco.

The youths were accompanied by representatives from the association, together with consultant Mario Cachia and Moira Grixti, nursing officer at the Diabetes Clinic at Mater Dei Hospital.

The Diabetes Association is a voluntary non-governmental organisation aimed at educating its members and the public about diabetes. It provides support services and organises activities including weekend live-ins and its annual camp.

“The camp empowers participants to take control of their condition and provides the right environment to discuss related problems. HSBC Malta Foundation’s sponsorship offered these youths the opportunity to interact in an informal and fun environment with other people who constantly face the same condition,” said association president Anna Zammit McKeon.
