The Malta Developers Association has welcomed the skill cards scheme, which the Building Industry Consultative Council is introducing in the near future.

The MDA said the scheme would give due recognition to those who work in the construction industry and, at the same time, help raise quality, health and safety standards at the place of work.

It will eventually be required for all public procurement contracts

It will also improve the employment conditions of those who are qualified. Trades falling within the scheme include plumbers, assistant electricians, painters and tile layers. The Construction Industry Skill Card was announced last week. It will eventually be required for all public procurement contracts.

The card is intended to improve and maintain the highest standards in the construction industry. It will become mandatory in five years’ time and cardholders will be required to update their card every five years.

Updating a card will require the completion of a health and safety awareness course as well as courses covering innovations in the trade.

In a statement BICC chairman Charles Buhagiar said the card would significantly reduce the number of accidents in the industry, curb unfair competition and ensure fair service.
