San Gwann produced an excellent performance as they completely demolished Mellieha through goals by Karl Sciberras, Chris Agius (penalty) and Mark Psaila on two occasions.

Mellieha's Gordon Naudi missed a penalty. His shot from the spot smacked against the bar.

This was a balanced match which seemed destined for a draw but a goal scored in added time, through substitute Mark Bugeja, earned Dingli three points in their first league game of the season.

Just before the interval Dingli took the lead through Charles Azzopardi. James Galea had equalised nine minutes into the second period.

Zurrieq opened their commitments with a victory over Gzira, substitute Robert Bajada scoring two second-half goals for Jimmy Briffa's team.

Fabian Grech had reduced the arrears for Gzira 10 minutes from time but then was sent off for a second booking.

Qormi 1
Zebbug Rangers 0

This derby match was won by Qormi as they defeated Zebbug Rangers through an opportunistic Michael Borg Olivier goal midway through the second period.

In the 81st minute Qormi were reduced to ten players as Andrea Bonnici was sent off and two minutes later the referee dismissed Rangers' substitute Neil Francalanza. In added time Qormi hit the post through Anthony Brignone.

Vittoriosa Stars 2
St Andrews 0

Two fine goals from Larry Lagana paved the way for this merited victory for Vittoriosa over a St Andrews team which lacked punch up front.

St Andrews had substitute Keith Deguara red-carded with nine minutes to go.

Tarxien Rainbows 7
Attard 3

This was undoubtedly Simon Shead's match as the Tarxien striker scored six goals to earn his team three points against Attard. Shead netted three goals in each half.

Paul Farrugia, Joe Casha and Aldo Pace scored Attard's consolation goals. Tarxien's other goal came from Aaron Guazzo in the 79th minute.

Gharghur 0

The Amateurs showed their promotion intentions right from the first match as they opened their league commitments with a sound victory over Gharghur who completed the match with ten players after Sandro Caruana was sent off with 13 minutes to go.

The result was already 3-0 at that moment with goals from Simon Borg, Andrew Naudi and Matthew Borg putting Melita in front. Christian Glass added one for good measure in the 85th minute.

Birzebbuga 1
Mgarr United 0

An excellent goal scored by Paul Camilleri in the 51st minute proved enough for Birzebbuga St Peter's who started their league trek with a merited victory over an improved Mgarr side.

Joe Gerada's Fgura were worthy winners in this clash, their two goals coming in the second half through Mark Schembri and Edward Chetcuti.

Gudja United 2
Ghaxaq 0

Ivan Camilleri, the former Valletta and St George's striker, was the toast of Gudja after scoring two goals in his side's derby win over Ghaxaq.

Camilleri scored in the 23rd and 60th minute. Four minutes from time Ghaxaq were reduced to ten players when Kevin Gambin was sent off.
