Almost €200,000 worth of Xewkija local council’s assets have been frozen after the deputy mayor’s brother filed legal action.

G. V. Gozo Developments obtained a garnishee order against the council at a value of €190,125, which is the sum it is owed for the construction of pavements and a bulky refuse service.

The director of the company, Giovann Vella, is the brother of deputy mayor Monica Vella.

The contracts were awarded in 2012 and 2006 respectively , when Dr Vella was mayor before she was unseated by Paul Azzopardi in the elections.

Sources in the Labour-led council told The Times the company was not yet paid because the contracts were being “scrutinised” to ensure they were awarded properly.
