A dentist chair used to fix inmates' teeth is probably the most unusual item up for sale in a clearout of a former jail.

The chair is from the healthcare wing of NorthallertonPrison, in North Yorkshire, which is due for demolition.

The prison, parts of which date from the 18th century, was closed in 2013.

The jail was bought by Hambleton Council for £1.4 million. There are plans to redevelop the site, although some listed buildings will be preserved.

The council has put the chair on eBay with a reserve price of £1,000.

"We understand the chair was re-upholstered shortly before the prison closed - and all the equipment has been newly installed," said council leader Mark Robson.

"It is all in excellent condition, so we were surprised it was left behind. It is certainly one of the most unusual items we have had to sell - but we hope it can go to a good home."

The council said the buyer must dismantle and move the dental equipment themselves.
