The demolition of the main span over City Gate was almost complete by this afternoon.
The demolition work was started yesterday and the whole process, including the demolition of the row of arches under Pope Pius Street, including the former shops along the west side of Freedom Square is expected to be completed within three weeks.
Meanwhile, the part of Freedom Square closest to St John Cavalier now looks like a quarry but building of the basement along a section of the square bordering Republic Street has almost reached ground level. The square will be the site of the new Parliament building.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt are due to inspect the project works tomorrow morning.
