Mutual political trust was at the basis of the relationship between Malta and China, according to the Beijing Communist party boss.

Guo Jinlong was in Malta this afternoon for a meeting with the country’s highest authorities, including the President and the Prime Minister.

At Auberge de Castille, where he was welcomed by Joseph Muscat, Mr Jinlong described the friendship between both countries as “sincere”.

The Chinese party boss was accompanied by a 15-strong delegation.

Journalists were welcome for the introductory comments; the meeting between the Chinese delegation, Dr Muscat, Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi and Foreign Minister George Vella continued behind closed doors.

Dr Muscat said he looked forward to exploring better ways of strengthening the ties between China and Malta.

Mr Jinlong is a member of China’s all-important decision-making politburo.
