Motorists fined for not paying their road licence will be able to pay in instalments after the intervention of Transport Minister Austin Gatt.

In a letter to Malta Transport Authority chairman Simon Vella, Dr Gatt said some car owners had difficulties paying the fine at one go.

According to instructions given by Dr Gatt, motorists should pay 25 per cent of the due amount immediately, while the rest will be staggered over a period not longer than six months.

Until the fee is paid in full the car has to remain garaged and the licence plates handed to the authority.

New rules that came into force last week lay down that motorists who did not pay their road licence after three months from the expiry date be fined €2 daily until they paid it.
