Declan Brennan became the new U-17 Open champion when he beat Sam Harvey in a 5-4 thriller in Buġibba on Sunday.

Harvey won the first frame with a superb 114 and then he went two ahead by winning the next frame 68-13. Brennan kept cool to level matters before the end of the first session as he won the next two frames 76-69 and 55-46.

Harvey again opened a two-frame lead to move a step closer to the title but Brennan came back strongly by winning the last three frames to clinch victory and the €200 prize money at stake.

In the match for third place Scott Donaldson (Scotland) had the better of Zak Barton (England) 3-2.

Luca Brecel (Belgium) won the first tournament in 2007 followed by Ryan Clark (England) in 2008 and Jake Nicholson (England) in 2009.

The tournament was sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority, Bank of Valletta, San Antonio Hotel and Apple Snooker Club.
